Idaho, a state in the USA, has an average elevation of 1,524 m: a mountainous state like the other states belonging to the Rocky Mountains region. This state has a varied relief made up of plains, mountains and canyons. Borah Peak, with an elevation of 3,859 m, is the highest point. The lowest point is located in Lewiston, 224 m above sea level, at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. The center of the state is made up mainly of high mountain ranges, including the Salmon River Mountains. In southern Idaho, a large crescent-shaped alluvial plain called the Snake River Plain, named after the main river that crosses it, occupies 25% of the state's surface. This plain is home to the city of Boise, the state's largest city, located at an elevation of 824 m. The Snake River is a mighty river that has carved several canyons, including the deepest in the United States, Hells Canyon, on the Oregon-Idaho border.
Approximately 41% of Idaho's surface is covered in forest. This primarily occupies the Rocky Mountains in the northern and central parts of the state. Conifers are particularly well represented, with various varieties of pine, fir, spruce, and cedar. The drought-tolerant ponderosa pine grows in areas that receive less than 500 mm of precipitation per year. Other native species include Douglas fir, western red cedar, and plains spruce. Cottonwood is also fairly common in the south, and birch in the Panhandle. Most of the southern part of the state is arid and covered with low shrubs and steppe vegetation. Most of the United States' large mammals are found in the wild in Idaho, such as antelope, elk, grizzly bears, lynx, mule deer, and white-tailed deer. A number of small mammals are also represented, such as beavers, coyotes, red foxes, otter, badgers, weasels, mink, woodchucks, and raccoons. Idaho also serves as a stopover for several hundred southbound migratory birds in the fall, such as mallards and Canada geese.
