Horse riding has a long tradition in Croatia with indigenous breeds such as the Medimurje, Posavina, Lipizzaner, Hladnokrvnjak and the Croatian Coldblood. The latter is the most common. Many of these horses have been domesticated for hundreds of years and have proven useful on the farm before being used for horseback riding trail rides.
The most elegant breed is found in the famous Lipizzaner stud in Dakovo, Slavonia. Founded in 1506, it is one of the oldest horse farms in Europe. The most striking example of the equestrian tradition in Croatia is the famous Sinj Alka equestrian competition which takes place every year in August in the Dalmatian city of Sinj.
