The Vercors, a vast limestone plateau has long been inaccessible. Only a few mule trails allowed to penetrate into the mountain. The Maquis du Vercors was a rural Free French resistance ("maquis") group who resisted the 1940-1944 German occupation of France in World War II. The Maquis du Vercors used the prominent scenic plateau known as the massif du Vercors (Vercors Plateau) as a refuge. Many members of the maquis, called "maquisards" died fighting in 1944 in the Vercors Plateau. We will cross the Vercors from the South to the North (part 1), starting from the Provence Drome, up to Autrans between the Drôme and Isère. The week after, from the North to the South (part 2). A different route to return for those who wish to make the 2 weeks: an incredible ten-day trip on horseback. Climatic crossroads between the Alps and Provence, the variety of landscapes, fauna and flora protected by the Vercors natural park, makes this region a paradise for riders.

PART 1 - FROM LOZERON TO AUTRANS

Day 1: Meeting at Lozeron in the Drôme, at the foot of the western side of the Vercors. Possible transfer from Valence train station. Welcome dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Lozeron - The Echaillon. Lozeron lies at the foot of the Vercors, on the southwest flank of the massif. We leave the Provencal landscapes yet to ride along mule trails and forest tracks up to Grand Echaillon in Ambel forest, ski trails in winter. Dinner at the inn overnight at the lodge.

Day 3: Echaillon - Col du Rousset. Very nice step along the southern edge of the plateau, with stunning views of the Drôme Provençale, through forests and meadows. In the evening, we reach Col du Rousset, a small ski resort.

Day 4: Col du Rousset - Pre Grandu.A breathtaking day at 1800 meters above sea level at the foot of Grand Veymont. Lawns among herds, to Roman quarries. The limestone blocks that were cut were shipped on mules on steep paths to the southern cities, and served including paving streets. We spend the night in a refuge, camping in an unforgettable setting.

Day 5: Pre Grandu - Corrençon en Vercors. We head to the Highlands Nature Reserve. Crossing this natural, wild, unspoiled, whose access is authorized only for hikers and riders. Riding through historical middle age battle field where you'll see the boundary stone carved with the king sign the "fleur de lys" you will meet the soul of this land.  A breathtaking view of the grand Veymont, the Isere valley and the snowcap Alps. Accommodation in a nice hotel.

Day 6: Corrençon en Vercors - Autrans. We will ride in beautiful forests to nearly 1500 meters. Picnic in the mountains before descending toward Autrans and it's beautiful plateau, before arriving at our nice and warm guesthouse for our evening.

Day 7: Autrans. Transfer to Grenoble or Valence train stations and Lozeron if you left your car for those who do the 1st part. Rest in the pleasant Autrans village, for those who follow on the 2nd part.

PART 2 - FROM AUTRANS TO LOZERON

Day 1: Autrans. Appointment in the evening for those who join the part 2. Possible transfer from Valence or Grenoble train stations.

Picnic in the mountains before riding down to Lans en Vercors, beautiful gaits on the Allières Plateau above Villard de Lans, before arriving at the hotel.

Day 3: Corrençon en Vercors - La Chapelle en Vercors. We ride up on magnificent Herbouilly plateau with nice canters in grass. At 1600 meters above sea level, on the balconies of the Vercors East, we will find an overview of the massif through the cooler, ice nature reserve operated until the early twentieth century. Visit the village of La Chapelle before a nice dinner and overnight in a guesthouse.

Day 4: La Chapelle en Vercors - Font d'Urle. Pleasant day in the forests: more than 3000 hectares where it would not be surprising to see deers having been reintroduced in the 1950s. We arrive late afternoon at Font d'Urle. Overnight at the hotel in the ski resort.
