HORSE RIDING TRIP IN MONGOLIA
INDICATIVE ITINERARY *
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar – Bayan Gobi Desert
OVERNIGHT IN LUXURY YURTS
Meet your English-speaking guide upon the arrival of Turkish Airlines flight TK236 (scheduled to land in Ulaanbaatar around 7:20 AM) or, if you are already in Mongolia, at the Khubilai Hotel (4*) at 9:00 AM*.
Immediate departure for the Mongolian steppe! Comfortable 4x4 vehicles with drivers (Land Cruiser or equivalent) will take us across the vast grasslands to Khogno Khan Park—known as Bayan Gobi ("the rich Gobi")—a northern extension of the Gobi Desert located in central Mongolia. Lunch at a restaurant en route.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive at our first private yurt camp, nestled amidst the dunes of Bayan Gobi. Our richly decorated yurts blend comfort with tradition, featuring large beds with comfortable mattresses and cashmere blankets, traditional furnishings, and private bathroom facilities (shower and toilet). Enjoy a refreshing shower in the traditional tent attached to your yurt, which houses your private bathroom. The late afternoon is dedicated to relaxation in this magnificent setting. You can settle into a deckchair in the restaurant's lounge area and browse through the books provided on Mongolia—covering its history, wildlife, and culture—while enjoying tea, coffee, or a cold drink. You also have the option to rest in your yurt or explore the dunes surrounding the camp. Dinner is served in the large restaurant tent, decorated with traditional motifs.
Approximately 4.5 hours of driving (excluding stops). * If you are arriving from Europe or the Americas, we recommend spending a night at the Khubilai Hotel before the tour begins to acclimatize to the time difference.
Day 2: Horseback ride in the Bayan Gobi dunes
PRIVATE TRADITIONAL MUSIC CONCERT – OVERNIGHT STAY IN LUXURY YURTS
A gentle wake-up call—one of our rituals you’ll quickly come to love! A team member will knock on your yurt and leave a cup of coffee or tea (your choice) and warm towels at your door, allowing you to drift slowly out of your dreams. Afterward, you can enjoy a hearty breakfast in the dining tent. The horses are ready for our first ride through the Bayan Gobi dunes. Picture a ribbon of golden sand winding for nearly 80 kilometers through the heart of the vast Mongolian steppes. That is exactly what awaits you at "Bayan Gobi"—the "Rich Gobi." Located about 280 km west of Ulaanbaatar in Bulgan Province, this site is part of the protected landscape surrounding the Khogno Khan Mountains. It offers a rare spectacle: dunes rising suddenly amidst lush green meadows, winding rivers, small lakes, and rocky hills. This is not the vast southern desert, but an isolated stretch of desert—seemingly placed there by a whim of nature—creating a contrast that is both surprising and harmonious. Here, fine sand forms undulating ridges that sometimes reach several meters in height, bordered by shrubs and tall grasses. Unlike the Southern Gobi, this region receives more rainfall, allowing rich vegetation to thrive alongside the dunes. The result? A unique ecosystem where desert meets steppe—ideal for nature lovers and photographers in search of exceptional light. You will enjoy these unique and striking landscapes while riding alongside the nomads who tend the horses, gaining a first glimpse into the lives of this legendary horse-riding people. You are likely to encounter Bactrian camels—plentiful in the region—foraging among the dunes. Return to camp for lunch.
We then continue our horseback exploration of this rich ecosystem where the desert meets the steppe. We return to camp in the late afternoon for a well-deserved hot shower! Before dinner, traditional musicians will introduce us to Mongolian music during a private concert inside the large traditional tent. Mongolian traditional music is defined by a deeply nomadic identity, inextricably linked to the vast steppes of Central Asia; its melodies evoke the wind, the galloping of horses, and the immensity of the landscape. Among its iconic instruments, the *morin khuur* holds a central place: this two-stringed fiddle, featuring a carved horse's head atop its neck, is traditionally crafted from pine wood with a leather-covered soundbox. Its rich, expressive sound perfectly mimics the neighing and galloping of horses and even the sound of the wind, symbolizing the sacred bond between the Mongolian people and their mounts. The *morin khuur* lends Mongolian music an evocative power and emotional depth that have endured for centuries, preserving the country's nomadic and shamanic spirit. Dinner takes place in the large traditional tent before you retire to the comfort of your yurt for a second night under the starry Mongolian sky.
Day 3: Riding through the dunes and cliffs of Bayan Gobi
ERDENE KHAMBIIN KHIID MONASTERY – MONGOLIAN COOKING WORKSHOP – OVERNIGHT IN LUXURY YURTS
After a gentle awakening amidst the sands of Bayan Gobi and an invigorating breakfast, we set off on horseback to explore a new, more mountainous area reminiscent of the rock formations found in Arizona or Jordan’s Wadi Rum.
We ride to the Buddhist monastery of Erdene Khambiin Khiid. Situated at the foot of Mount Khögnö Khan (1,967 m), Erdene Khambiin Khiid invites visitors to a moment of quiet reflection. Partially restored in the early 1990s following the fall of Mongolia's communist regime, the site consists of three small buildings clinging to the cliffside: a temple for religious services and two pagodas. One pagoda houses a large prayer wheel, while the other is dedicated to a deity said to grant wishes. Below lie the ruins of the original monastery founded by Zanabazar—the first Bogdo Gegeen—who was born nearby in 1635. Revered as a saint, he was trained in Tibet in the ways of Lamaism, a Buddhist tradition dating back to the 13th century. As the first representative in Mongolia of the "Yellow Hat" sect, he founded numerous monasteries, including this one, which was named Erdene Khambiin ("Jewel of the Khamba") in honor of his beloved teacher. Although initially destroyed by his rival Galdan Boshigt—an Oirat leader and "Red Hat" partisan—and later razed during the Soviet purges of the early 20th century, the site is now maintained by a Buddhist nun. After lunch, we ride back toward the mountains to take in spectacular views where dunes blend with rivers and cliffs, creating a unique landscape. Back at camp, those interested can spend the early evening taking part in a Mongolian cooking workshop with our chef. You will discover the authentic flavors of Mongolian cuisine—a true explosion of nomadic tastes that warms both heart and soul! *Buuz*—delicious steamed dumplings generously filled with meat and aromatic onions (or vegetables for the vegetarian version)—are a true celebration of conviviality. Their crispy, golden-brown cousins, *khuushuur*, offer an irresistible fried alternative: light dough encasing a savory, spiced filling—perfect for a tasty treat after a day of adventure on the steppes. As for the next dish—a comforting mix of stir-fried noodles, fresh vegetables, and tender meat—it embodies Mongolian generosity through its delicious simplicity and flavors meant for sharing. Rooted in centuries-old traditions and also available in vegetarian versions, these specialties will turn your dinner into an unforgettable experience, filled with camaraderie and culinary discoveries that will stay with you long after your trip ends!.
Day 4: Bayan Gobi – Karakorum – Khangai Mountains
ERDENE ZUU MONASTERY – ARCHERY INTRODUCTION – OVERNIGHT IN LUXURY YURTS
Today, we leave the Bayan Gobi desert—land of camels—to head for the Khangai valleys, land of yaks!
Our team takes on a real challenge: dismantling the yurts and our entire camp, only to set them up again in a completely different environment nearly three hours away. After breakfast, we drive by 4x4 to Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded by Ögödei Khan in 1235, Karakorum stands in the heart of the Orkhon Valley—a UNESCO World Heritage site embodying over two thousand years of nomadic and imperial history. A fascinating testament to Mongol grandeur, the city today offers evocative ruins of its palaces and temples, dominated by the magnificent Erdene Zuu Monastery. Built in 1586 using stones from the ancient capital itself, the monastery is encircled by 108 white stupas symbolizing peace and Buddhist spirituality. This region is considered the historic cradle of the nomadic lifestyle in Mongolia. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2004 as the "Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape," it is recognized for having been home to successive nomadic cultures since prehistoric times. Over more than two millennia, these cultures shaped a unique form of nomadic pastoralism that endures to this day among Mongolian herders. For UNESCO, Karakorum and the Orkhon Valley represent more than just a historical site; they form the symbolic and geographic heart of Mongolian nomadism—the place where this ancient way of life took root and spread across successive empires. You will visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery and the Karakorum Museum before having lunch at a local restaurant. We will then set off again—traveling first by road and then by track—to
reach the new location of our yurt camp, nestled in a secluded valley within the Khangai range. Overlooking the Orkhon Valley, the Khangai Mountains offer a magnificent landscape of rolling steppes, lush green hills, and forest-clad peaks. These vast expanses are still traversed today by numerous nomadic families, accompanied by their yurts and herds of horses, yaks, cashmere goats, and sheep. This legendary region invites you on a journey back in time, where Mongolia’s nomadic spirit reveals itself in all its splendor and timeless serenity. Once settled into your yurts, we invite you to enjoy a quintessentially Mongolian experience: archery! Our team will teach you how to handle a traditional wood-and-horn bow, nock the arrow, and aim at targets set a few dozen meters away. Carried by the steppe breeze, you will feel the adrenaline and precision of Genghis Khan’s ancient horsemen. It is a convivial experience that offers true cultural immersion. Dinner will be served in our large traditional tent. You will spend your first night in the heart of these vast, history-steeped landscapes, cozy and warm inside your yurt.
Approximately 3.5 hours of driving, excluding stops.
Day 5: Horseback ride through the nomadic valleys of the Khangai
NOMADIC LIFE – HOT SPRINGS AND MONGOLIAN QUEENS' BEAUTY RITUAL – OVERNIGHT IN LUXURY YURTS
This day is dedicated to total immersion in Mongolian nomadic life! Our ride will take us through the kind of Mongolian landscapes you have always imagined: yurts nestled on a carpet of green grass and wildflowers, free-roaming herds of yaks and horses, and meandering rivers tracing delicate patterns beneath the blue sky. You will have the opportunity to meet a nomadic family and discover their daily life, lived in harmony with their herds and this magnificent—albeit sometimes harsh—environment.
Lunch will be prepared by our chef. You will continue your journey on horseback to the hot springs that well up in the heart of the valley. Pools have been set up within a yurt camp, where our drivers will be waiting with the swimsuits you packed that morning.
You can then fully enjoy the benefits of these healing waters. We will return to camp by 4x4, feeling relaxed and revitalized. This is just the first step in a beauty ritual designed to make us worthy of entering the court of the Great Khan, for the evening will be dedicated to the beauty rituals of Mongolian queens! You will have the chance to try a selection of Mongolian beauty products made from natural ingredients derived from local flora and nomadic traditions (such as mare's milk). Your skin will thank you after five days in the dry air of Mongolia's deserts and mountains. This time of discovery and sharing will also be a convivial, social occasion. In the evening, you will once again savor our chef's culinary talents before drifting off to sleep in the cozy comfort of your yurt.
Day 6: On horseback to Tovkhon Monastery
TOVKHON MONASTERY – PHOTO SESSION IN TRADITIONAL ROYAL COSTUMES – OVERNIGHT STAY IN LUXURY YURTS
This is a landmark day! You have already completed many stages of your introduction to Mongolia: long rides and life in a yurt, of course, but also the cuisine, music, archery... and even a pampering session fit for the queens of Genghis Khan or Kublai Khan! Yet, the pilgrimage paths leading to Tovkhon Monastery—the true heart of Mongolian culture—still await you. At the pace of your mount, you will traverse golden steppes stretching as far as the eye can see and the wild ridges of the Khangai Mountains, treading ancient trails once used by nomads and pilgrims alike. Perched atop a sacred cliff, the monastery—founded in the 17th century by the great Zanabazar (the first Bogd Khan)—awaits you like a living sanctuary where Buddhist spirituality blends with millennia-old shamanic traditions. Deep within, you will feel the nomadic spirit that has shaped the identity of this legendary land. This adventure is far more than a simple horseback ride; it is a return to Mongolia's very roots, a journey of discovery where every step your horse takes brings you closer to the eternal essence of its culture.
Return to camp in the late afternoon. Tonight, you reach the culmination of your Mongolian odyssey; you are now worthy to stand before the Great Khan, like a 21st-century Marco Polo! For this occasion, you can choose from our traditional costumes and headdresses—featuring sumptuous colors and ornaments—designed for both men and women: *dels* (traditional coats) and dresses in every hue, along with belts, ceremonial armor, helmets, hats, and spectacular jewelry. Let your imagination run wild for a truly memorable photo session!* Our chef will pull out all the stops for this final dinner on the steppe, before you drift off to sleep, lulled by legendary tales of the Great Khans.
*Photos will be taken by our team using your own camera or phone; there will be no professional photographer.
Day 7: Khangai – Ulaanbaatar
Overnight stay at a 4-star hotel
Enjoy a final breakfast on the steppe and take a last look at the yurts that served as your home during this timeless week.
It is time to head back to Ulaanbaatar—a long journey made more comfortable by our 4x4 vehicles. Lunch will be served at a restaurant along the way. We arrive on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar in the late afternoon, bypassing the city center and its chaotic traffic. You will spend your final night at the magnificent 4-star Khubilai Hotel; its spectacular interior pays tribute to Kublai Khan, the builder of the largest empire in human history. An imposing statue of the Great Khan stands in the lobby, giving you the chance to come face-to-face with him—though we cannot guarantee he will welcome you to his court! The hotel features a swimming pool, sauna, and gym where you can unwind after the journey before enjoying a final dinner at the on-site restaurant.
