Destination

An exceptional horseback riding trip: you'll traverse the most beautiful landscapes of southern Alberta. Spend three days in the Rocky Mountains, riding along some of the region's finest horse-riding trails. At this time of year, the mountain peaks are usually still snow-capped, while spring is arriving in the plains, with the vibrant green poplar trees bursting into leaf. Then, the scenery changes as you ride 140 km on horseback over five days across the vast plains of southern Alberta, 400 km south of your starting point. The route takes you from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, near the Sweetgrass Hills on the Montana border, to the Cypress Hills in Saskatchewan. Ride through scenic canyons and along the Milk River, following trails once used by Indigenous peoples, whiskey traders, outlaws, and the North-West Mounted Police. At Writing-on-Stone, a historic site, you'll discover a desert landscape sacred to Indigenous peoples for millennia. This land has remained virtually unchanged since the time of the bison. The prairies offer ideal terrain for horseback riding, with ample opportunities for galloping for experienced riders. An unforgettable experience awaits you!

Riding

LEVEL:
This horseback riding trip is intended for intermediate to advanced riders with an adventurous spirit. It is important to be in good health before embarking on this wilderness trek, as medical services (other than first aid) are not readily available.

WEIGHT:
100 kg maximum.

RYTHM:
At all three gaits. Some sections will be at a canter, particularly across open meadows, where the terrain allows it. An average of 4 to 7 hours on horseback per day. Primarily at walk, on trails ranging from easy to moderately challenging. Trotting and cantering when the terrain permits. Some trails require dismounting and walking alongside the horse over rocky terrain, either to avoid any risks or to enjoy a panoramic view inaccessible on horseback. For most riders, this change of pace is appreciated and provides a welcome opportunity to stretch their legs. We recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes suitable for walking one or two kilometers. Between 5 and 7 hours on horseback per day, covering up to 40 km. For three days, you will explore the most beautiful horse-riding trails in the Rocky Mountains. Then, you will experience a change of scenery, riding 140 km across the vast plains of southern Alberta over five days. The terrain is sometimes rugged, with sections requiring dismounting, as well as stretches of trotting and galloping, river crossings, and rolling grassy hills.

GROUPS:
3 to 8 riders per group.

GUIDES:
Our passionate and knowledgeable guides will share their expertise about the different regions you explore. You can learn about horseback riding techniques in the wilderness, essential survival skills, and the secrets of living in harmony with nature. Depending on the group size, one or two specialized wilderness riding guides will accompany you throughout the trip. Riders assigned to carry the equipment will transport your luggage to the campsite, usually along a more straightforward route than the one taken by the main group.

HORSES:
The horses have been selected for their stamina, temperament, and suitability for riding in mountainous terrain. They are trained in the western riding style, but most riders with English riding experience adapt very quickly to this style after a brief introduction and some guidance. Participants are encouraged to help with the care of the horses and other camp chores. Most horses are equipped with western saddles, but English saddles can be provided for those who prefer them.

TACK:
Western saddles. English saddles available upon request when making a reservation.

Comfort

This is a horseback riding trip with several stops along the way, and overnight stays in different types of accommodation: inns, hotels, and campsites. You will spend 4 nights at the ranch: 3 nights camping and 1 night in a hotel.
Nights 1 to 3: Ranch
Nights 4 to 6: Campsite
Night 7: Hotel in Manyberries
Night 8: Campsite

The Ranch:
The ranch is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, 13 km south of the charming village of Bragg Creek and approximately 60 km southwest of Calgary, in a wilderness area that extends to the Continental Divide. The landscape varies, ranging from rolling green hills and open forests to alpine meadows, lush, pristine forests, and steep limestone cliffs.
The heart of the guest house is a large, bright common area where you can chat, eat, cook, listen to stories, or simply enjoy the view of the horse pasture. The guest house has 5 bedrooms (1 single room with a double bed, 1 room with a queen-size bed, and 3 rooms with a king-size bed, two single beds, or two double beds). Two full bathrooms are available for all guests. We provide linens and towels, but please bring your own soap and shampoo. A hairdryer is available in each bathroom.
Smoking is not permitted on the property, except around the outdoor fireplace. There is no television or cell phone reception in the guest house, but Wi-Fi is free. You can use the iPod docking station, the board games, and the selection of books and magazines provided. A telephone is available for local and long-distance calls (with a phone card).
Laundry service is available for an additional fee during certain hours of the day.
The camps:
During the trek, you will camp at simple but comfortable sites, located in strategic locations. Tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping mats are provided. You will always camp near a clear stream where you can bathe and wash. The toilets are pit latrines dug into the ground, located a short distance from the campsite. They are not very elaborate (simply tarpaulins used as walls), but they do have seats. There is no electricity at the campsite, so we recommend that you bring rechargeable batteries or solar chargers.
Hotel:
You will be staying at a small, prairie-style hotel in Manyberries, which has a real saloon. The atmosphere there is very welcoming.
